Michael - Strength for Life and Landscaping

Each month we choose a well-deserving individual to be StrongerLife’s Athlete of the Month! October’s AOM is Michael McClary. Read on to learn a little more about Michael and why he started StrongerLife Fitness in Lexington, KY.

Why did you join StrongerLife?

I had the good fortune my physician referred Jeff Musgrave as my Physical Therapist. After stalking Jeff for a few minutes on social media, I discovered he was involved with a gym designed specifically for the elderly. I thought "Hey, I'm elderly. I'm grossly out of shape. I'm retired and just fart around all day. I should give it a try." So I did. Might be the best decision of my life.

What challenges were you facing when you started working with StrongerLife?

I faced the challenge of old age. I thought it was normal to gradually lose your mobility and just fade away. StrongerLife has totally changed my outlook. I've only been going three times a week for about four months and I'm absolutely stronger. I have better balance. I can do yard work without pain. Last week I dug a 25-foot trench around one of my decks. No problem. I can get up and down from the ground. I can pick up heavy things without wondering if I'll hurt my back. I feel like I have control of my life again.

What’s one thing you are now able to do that you didn’t think was possible before StrongerLife?

Getting up and down from the ground with ease. Dig a ditch without back pain the next day.

What would you tell others that are considering joining StrongerLife?

I don't think anyone else in the country has exercise classes specifically designed for the elderly. Classes are mostly led by Doctors of Physical Therapy. They don't just give that title away. A lot of time thought and medical knowledge go into the exercise plan they create. The plan changes every day so you are never ever bored.
